Job Description

Occupational Therapist - Term Time 38 weeks per annum pro rata -  9am-5.30pm

This role will suit an experienced child and adolescent mental health professional with desirable experience of an education setting.

About Us

ADO is a not for profit organisation providing outdoor education and therapeutic opportunities with children, young people and adults with animals, wildlife and nature. We have over 20 varying species of animals to support our therapy and education services. We have a small specialist outdoor alternative provision supporting children and young people of which a high proportion have an EHCP. We require a therapist who has a passion in supporting pupils who may have difficulty managing social interactions and can display challenging behaviour.

Reporting to the Head of Therapy and Education, this role will support children and young people that attend our core Outdoor Education and therapy services. This includes our term time specialist Alternative Provision and covers primary, secondary and post16. Opportunities to work additional sessional hours during holiday periods providing therapy sessions for groups, children, young people and adults.

Person Specification

We are looking for a therapist who meets all the following criteria:

Essential:

♦ Relevant degree qualification in Occupational Therapy
♦ Possess up to date knowledge of child and adolescent models and developmental appropriate behaviours.
♦ At least two years experience of professional working with children and young people aged 7-18 years in a paediatric and or mental health capacity and some linked experience communicating with families/carers and professionals as appropriate
♦ Strong effective communication verbally and in writing, team working skills and a flexible approach are essential.

We are seeing an increase in referrals for children with SEMH and referrals may have experienced trauma and/or abuse and be LAC. Presentations include anger, anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, LD, neurodiverse, behavioural issues.

As part of a small specialist education team, you will be required to conduct assessments, formulate individual learner plans, therapy plans and deliver 1:1 sessions and group activities in line with the children and young people's EHCPs. You will be working with varying mental health needs promoting and developing the mental, emotional, physical and social well-being of children and young people and will possess the ability to liaise and communicate with families, carers and professionals, attend meetings (virtual and face to face) and provide reports.

Essential - The applicant will need to be willing to work on a site that houses a variety of animals which are a key part of our specialist education provision. Optional training can be provided for handling animals to aid therapy engagement and build the therapist and patient relationship as required. Optional opportunity to enrol on a study program for Animal Assisted Therapy Post graduate qualification alongside practical onsite experience.

Essential – The site is an outdoor education site and on uneven ground. We are looking for a holistic thinking therapist that is prepared to flexibly utilise the natural space to deliver evidence based occupational therapy in a unique setting which does not have to conform to 4 walls and has the additional benefit of linked eco nature therapy. Due to the education site being an outdoor specialist provision, the role can be physically demanding to work with young people 1:1 around the full site space dependent on the child/young person’s interests to support engagement in therapy. The applicant must be willing to work outdoors in all weathers with the appropriate clothing and footwear. We have a variety of shelters, tents, sheds and marquees with heating and lighting and wooden buildings will be in place by 2022.

Desirable –

♦ Full driving licence with use of own car for driving between our admin office for potential admin/planning periods and offsite meetings.

Training and Development

You will be provided opportunities or will be expected to engage in CPD to maintain registration with HCPC and expected to contribute to service development.

Summary

This post is Monday to Fridays term time 38 weeks (9am-5.30pm with half hour break) to cover the AP provision hours and after school client therapies.

This role has to date been filled part time and we are now looking for an innovative motivated therapist for a term time position 40hours per week with potential for full time all year post if preferred.

Optional Holiday sessional work to provide therapies and therapeutic sessions to children, young people and adults.

Potential for discussion of full time position with to enable us grow the therapies offered to families.

Job Type: Permanent (Term Time or Full Time)

Salary: £26,000 to £28,000 dependent on experience (This salary is the FTE based on 40 hours per week 52 weeks per year) Term Time salary will be Pro Rata 38/39 weeks per annum.
